Herb Meyer, Chair
Herb Meyer knows what it means to need in home personal support services. As a younger man Herb served his county in the Korean War, was a successful business man, and traveled the world. In 1993, while sailing on San Francisco Bay, a freak accident happened when a wench broke, sending Herb onto the deck floor and breaking his neck. In a split second, Herb became a quadriplegic and his life as he then knew it changed forever.
After many months in the hospital and countless hours of rehab, Herb elected to live independently and remain in his own home. At that time, there were few caregivers available to hire so he had to be very creative. He moved a caregiver into his own home and taught him how to perform all the necessary tasks including personal care, cooking, cleaning, transfer, etc. Throughout the years, Herb has had to put a lot of time and energy into finding qualified caregivers to assist him to stay safely in his own home. When he heard about the formation of the IHSS Public Authority of Marin he knew that he had to get involved. Herb wanted to put his talents to work in helping others in similar situations find qualified and responsible in home care providers.
As the Governing Board President he has really enjoyed utilizing his in depth knowledge of In-Home Supportive Services and helping to advocate for the rights of those who need assistance to stay in their homes. As Governing Board Chair, he is particularly adept at keeping his fellow Board members focused on achieving the Marin Public Authority’s goals as well as garnering support from local legislators and administrative offices.
Herb serves as a role model for all people. He continues to enjoy sailing in the Bay with his sailing buddies who he says, “have been one of his core support groups along with his singing group, caregivers and his significant other.”
